In May, several of our supervisors in Iowa were chosen by the Iowa Association of Community Providers (IACP) to receive the 2021 Community Builder award for their contributions to help Vodec’s consumers reach their full potential. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge ALL of Vodec’s supervisors.
Many of our supervisors honed their services’ skills on the frontline as direct service professionals, or DSPs. This gives them an edge in being able to guide and direct the next generation of DSPs. Their prior experience gives them credibility through their supervision. They were promoted through their DSP successes and desire to climb within Vodec’s ranks.
They are constantly pulled in a multitude of directions. They switch from problem solving to de-escalating a situation to finishing paperwork in the blink of an eye. They aren’t afraid to jump in where help is needed. I’ve seen them work long hours, cook Thanksgiving dinner for 100 people and cheer on their consumers at Special Olympics events.
Jade Donovan, our residential services manager in Council Bluffs, was asked to share an anecdote as one illustration of the above and beyond attitude Vodec’s supervisors share. Her response: “I don’t have any one specific story to tell because there are so many times every day that they make me proud to be their manager.”
I want to say we all are an integral part of this Vodec adventure. We are each cogs in the machinery that make Vodec work. We need all the cogs. And in this case, I offer a shoutout to the cogs who are supervisors. Without them, the Vodec machine breaks down. They are absolutely critical for us to fulfill our mission.
I’d love to give each supervisor a huge pat on the back for the wonderful job each does. But during COVID, they will have to be virtual. Supervisors, consider your backs patted!
